WHAT TO BRING

A Guide for Relief Team Volunteers

What To Bring:

 

Individual Level (Mandatory):

 

  • Air mattress with pump (you can coordinate 1 pump per 5 people)

  • Sleeping bag

  • Pillow and pillow case(s)

  • Bathing towel and face towel

  • Laundry bag or garbage bag for dirty clothing 

  • Day pack (backpack with secure zippers, medium to large size): this will be brought on the bus and to worksites

  • Rain poncho 

  • Water bottle, reusable 

  • Baseball cap

  • Safety equipment â€‹

  • Work clothing - comfortable, form fitting, & light weight 

    • Boots, watertight with steel shank, toe, and insole if possible Click here for more information

    • Long pants: approved:  

      • jeans (recommended)

      • cover-alls/over-alls

      • scrubs 

    • NOT approved:

      • leggings

      • shorts or capris 

      • yoga pants 

    • Tall socks (new pair for each day of work) helps keep ticks away

  • Toiletries:​​

    • body wash / face wash

    • shampoo & conditioner 

    • sunscreen

    • insect repellent 

    • hair ties and clips 

    • antibacterial hand sanitizer 

    • lip balm with SPF

    • ALL necessary medications both prescription and non-prescription (if under 18, you must get approval by group leader or instructor)

 

 

Individual Level (Optional):

 

  • extra sleeping blanket if traveling during cooler seasons/months

  • additional bath towel and hand towel

  • swimming/beach towel

  • ear plugs for sleeping

  • aloe 

  • anti-itch cream for bug bites 

 

Group Level (Mandatory):

 

  • First Aid Kits (one per 10 volunteers)

  • Large coolers labeled with group/organization name (one per 10 volunteers)

 

Group Level (Optional):

​

  • Tools â€‹(depending on the nature of the program, some tools may be beneficial to bring along in addition to the tools we provide)

    • hammers

    • prybars

    • shovels (both flat and spayed)

    • rakes (leaf and garden)

    • crow bars 

    • wheelbarrows

    • saws (reciprocating, bow, & hack)


Things you may wish to know:
1. If you have not had a tetanus shot in the last ten years, you should get one.
